How to Install Cabinets Using Laser Level
There are four major steps on how to install cabinets with a laser level. Make sure that you have all of the tools and materials needed.
Step 1 – Measuring and Marking
The very first thing that you need to do is to measure the height of the cabinet. After you are done, mount the laser level on the tripod about a couple of inches away from the wall where you will install the cabinets. Place the tripod on a table if the tripod is not high enough. A laser level allows you to find the high and low spots, thus, helping you to decide where to start.
After setting the determined height in the tripod, you may turn the laser level on. The device will project a laser beam, forming a virtual chalk line on the wall. If you feel the need to mark the laser beam, draw the line along the beam carefully. By using the right laser level in installing cabinets, it saves you a huge deal of time in the leveling part. Another trick with the uppers, leave about a 1/8” gap between the ceiling and the cabinet to give you a bit of leeway when you are trying to level them.
Before moving to the next step on how to install cabinets with a laser level, it is also important to find the wall studs using a stud finder since they will support whole cabinets. Also, pay attention to the placement of electricity wires and plumbing. Always double-check your markings and measuring before doing anything else.
Step 2 – Mounting the Support Board
Mount the support board, or sometimes called as ledger board, on the wall right at the studs. During the installation process, this ledger board will temporarily support the weight of the cabinets. Place this board just below the base of the cabinets that will be installed. Since the ledger board supports the weight, you can only remove this board after you are done installing the whole cabinets.
Step 3 – Installing the Cabinets
Before installing the cabinets, remove the hardware and the doors to make them lighter. Attach the two cabinets with screws using a screw gun. Attach one screw at the top and another at the bottom sides to secure the cabinets. A bubble level is also handy to check if the cabinets are aligned perfectly or not.
Secure the cabinets into the wall at the studs. It is important to note that the top of cabinets must be on the same line with the markings of the laser level. It is also wise to drill the screws through the thicker frame beforehand. Remember, the first one is the most critical.
Repeat the steps above for all the cabinets. Use a filler board, usually provided by the manufacturers, to fill the gap between the wall and the last cabinet. If you work alone, it will be better to install two cabinets at a time rather than working on multiple cabinets together. You can either install a single cabinet or attach as many cabinets as you can lift. However, for your own safety, you can only do the latter if you are working with other people.
Step 4 – Attaching Hardware and Doors
Congratulations, after all of the heavy work, you can relax a bit on this step. I am sure you do remember how you removed all the hardware before. Now, attach the hardware and the doors to the cabinets. Do not forget to remove the ledger board that you installed before.
